Eleven ideas of what news is worth to the EU

MEPs filed 1,544 amendments to AgoraEU program. We read the ones that matter for journalism, built a dashboard to make sense of the proposals, and found the amendment that would zero us out entirely.

Exactly a year ago, to the day, the European Commission published its proposal for AgoraEU, the €8.6 billion programme meant to fund culture, media and civil society under the EU’s 2028–2034 budget. Since then the text has been through several rounds of member state surgery in the Council and a draft report in the Parliament. Now the amendment stage has arrived: 1,544 amendments from MEPs, of which 372 touch media and journalism (at least according to our count), adding up to eleven distinct visions of the programme’s architecture.

In this piece, we’ll walk you through the most important amendments and what they mean for the future of media funding in Europe and introduce the MEPs who would cut all funding from media in the next EU budget.

The zero-sum game, now in writing
